In chapter 6, we discussed the biosynthetic pathways for the creation of cholesterol and the multiple processes that occur in this pathway, along with the blockage, by way of a cholesterol-lowering drug, of the enzyme HMG-CoA that is necessary for the production of cholesterol, the final product, before going on to be converted into a cascade of steroid hormones. Therefore, CLDs do the job they were designed to do, i.e. lower cholesterol but they do not, we might add, resolve the problem of heart disease.
